PROGRAM NOTES

Anže Rozman, Creatures of the Enchanted Forest (2010)

Creatures of the Enchanted Forest was written in 2010 for the Slovenian flute quartet, Nimfs, and received its premiere in November of that year. Each movement of the piece describes one scene from the imaginary enchanted forest:

I. Through the Enchanted Forest

II. The Bird and the Predator

III. The Evening Singer

IV. The Little Beast

Dianna Link, The Music of Water (2017)

"This piece was written as my personal love letter to the flute. I have a tendency to associate instrument sounds with physical things often in nature, and in my mind the flute represents water. As a flutist, I have developed a great love for my instrument and I wanted to represent the water-like qualities I associate with the flute in a piece of music."

- Dianna Link

I. Ocean

II. Rain

Takashi Yoshimatsu, Twitter Birds Blog (2007)

Twitter Birds by Takashi Yoshimatsu is a musical exploration that whimsically captures the essence of our digital age, where the virtual and natural worlds collide. The piece reflects on the ubiquitous nature of social media, particularly the ever-chirping "tweets" of Twitter, and draws a playful parallel with the enchanting melodies of birds.

The first movement introduces us to the virtual aviary, where fluttering flutes embody the rapid exchange of information in the digital realm. The staccato articulations and quick passages mimic the lively chatter of social media, creating a vibrant sonic tapestry.

In the second movement, Yoshimatsu takes us into the serene realm of bird calls. The flutes echo the melodic beauty of avian voices, offering a contrast to the frenetic energy of the first movement. This section allows the listeners to experience the timeless and serene aspects of nature amidst the fast-paced digital landscape.

The final movement is a synthesis of these worlds, blending the playful virtuosity of the digital tweets with the organic charm of bird-inspired melodies. Yoshimatsu invites us to contemplate the coexistence of these seemingly disparate elements, finding harmony in the diversity of sounds.

Twitter Birds is not just a musical composition; it is a sonic journey that prompts reflection on the intersection of technology and nature. Yoshimatsu's imaginative score invites us to listen with fresh ears to the symphony of tweets and bird calls that surround us daily, urging us to find beauty and connection in both the virtual and the natural realms.

I.  Bird Call

II. Twitter Fuga

III. Chirp Waltz

IV. Bird Alleluia

V. Feather Dance

ARTISTS

Houston born artist, Peter Broz, has been a member of BOX13 since December 2020. Peter discovered his fondness for drawing at a very young age. His childhood art mostly reflected his love of animals in their natural surroundings. In recent years Peter has been creating paintings and drawings that combine his longtime interest in the natural world and the human figure to portray aspects of the human condition. Peter’s works are primarily 2-dimensional; in a variety of materials such as acrylic, ink, pencil, colored pencil, oil, watercolors and most recently digital art.

Peter graduated from the University of Houston with a B.F.A in Studio Painting in 2014. Shortly after graduation Peter received the Juror’s award for the 2014 BIG SHOW at Lawndale. Peter has exhibited his work at several galleries in Houston including The Mariago Collective, Hardy and Nance, The Blaffer Museum, Archway Gallery and Catapult Gallery. He is represented by Catapult Gallery.

After graduating from college, Peter worked as a custom furniture builder for several years.  Furniture design and woodworking has been another long-term passion, which is also deeply rooted in a reverence for the beauty of natural materials like wood.  Peter then taught high school art in Houston ISD for 4 years. He is also a volunteer for The Woods Project, a local non-profit wilderness exploration and education program for disadvantaged students in Houston.

Kevin Lopez currently lives in Houston, Texas where he was born. Always quiet and reserved, he grew up in a large extended family, in a completely uninteresting suburb, and always saw himself as a bit of an outsider. In school, he found comfort in drawing and painting and went on to graduate with a BFA in Art from the University of Houston in 2011. He then worked as a graphic designer for some time. Because of Covid-19 and the cultural and social environment during 2020, he decided to pursue fine art.

His feelings of isolation during his formative years, as well as during mass isolation in 2020, informs his current work and has influenced his choice to explore ideas of multiplicity and solipsism as it pertains to identity through portraits and depictions of the mundane.

Kevin has shown work at Lawndale Art Center and Fort Bend Museum. He has work in the Carolyn Farb collection and Catapult Gallery. Kevin currently works in his studio at BOX13 ArtSpace in Houston, Texas.

Vote in TX, a collaborative effortwith artist Eepi Chaad, is a social media project featuring original drawings from multiple artists and a website providing quick links to voting resources for Texans.

In early 2023, she created The Send Nudes Project in partnership with Art League Houston with the goal of engaging with the figurative tradition for a 21st century public while re-framing the nude figure under the lens of body positivity. Vargas currently works as a docent at the Blaffer Art Museum and as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Clear Lake and Art League.

-“Working with painting, sculpture, or animation, and mimicking surrealist aesthetics each of my pieces has a statement of its own. However, for the most part, my work attempts to deconstruct the concept of humanhood; reimagining humans as beautiful living creatures capable of dreaming, creating, and loving, and some other times as terrifying beings whose actions corrode their own existence and the planet".
