PROJECTS

2017 FALL TOUR

Off the Map: New Music for Flute Quartet
Saturday, November 11, 2017
7:30pm
Benzaquen Hall
DiMenna Center for the Performing Arts

Emissary Quartet believes that the creative possibilities of flute quartet are unexplored and underdeveloped. “Off the Map” celebrates the winning compositions of EQ’s International Call for Scores, part of our ongoing efforts to expand the flute quartet repertoire. This program features new masterworks by winning composers Karina Baras, Sung-Hyun Yun, and Kai-Young Chan. Paired with well-established works by Kuhlau, Higdon, and Dubois, EQ showcases the growing diversity of compositional voices in the flute quartet repertoire.

Our Call for Scores garnered submissions from over 190 composers hailing from 5 continents, and we are thrilled to have some of our composers in attendance. Read more about the Call for Scores and our winning composers here.

Off the Map: New Music for Flute Quartet was supported by New Music USA. To follow the project as it unfolds, visit our project page:  https://www.newmusicusa.org/projects/new-music-for-flute-quartet/

New Jersey Flute Society: Workshop & Recital

7:00-9:30pm at Caldwell University Theatre

From 0 to 60 in One Day: Efficient Rehearsal Strategies

As a long-distance flute quartet, we operate on a tour-based model in which we rehearse and perform intensively for a week at a time. We have developed extremely efficient group practice techniques which address intonation, alignment of technical passages, and consistency of phrasing and tone color. In this hands-on workshop we will share time-saving strategies and exercises which can improve an ensemble’s unity, precision, and expression in efficient and lasting ways. Applicable to chamber ensembles or flute sections of any level. Please bring your flutes!

Following the workshop, we will give a short recital of new and classic works for flute quartet, including Annika Sokolofsky's One Wish, Your Honey Lips (2016) and pieces by Jennifer Higdon, Pierre Max Dubois, and Kuhlau.
